About this event

We have learned a lot about climate change throughout the pandemic and some people have a better understanding of the longlasting and devastating effects that climate change will continue to have on our planet –on our health and wellbeing. Even if we fix poverty we will still be in a crisis because the world as we know it will no longer exist – for example, the impacts on our food sources from overheating, droughts and fires will destroy the way of life we have. This is a climate emergency and it is important that we as individuals learn how we can make an impact on this issue.

Presenters:

Emma Norton: Motivated by the climate emergency, Emma has been working in Canada’s energy sector for nearly a decade, specifically in the areas of energy efficiency and deep energy retrofits. Emma has effectively intervened in provincial utility hearings to ensure increasing ambition of demand-side management programs. She ran the Climate Jobs Roundtable, a series of events that focused on job creation and transitioning the energy economy. As the Nova Scotia lead for the international project Smarter Energy Communities in Northern and Arctic Regions of Europe, Emma facilitated knowledge transfer between communities in Canada and Europe who were seeking to reduce their carbon footprint through smarter energy use. Currently, Emma works as a consultant for projects related to climate justice, and more specifically housing, low-carbon buildings, and retrofits as climate solutions. Now Emma is the Atlantic Canada Organizer and Director of Communications with the Climate Emergency Unit.

Council of Canadians: Founded in 1985, the Council of Canadians is Canada’s leading social action organization, mobilizing a network of about 70 chapters across the country.

Through our campaigns, we advocate for clean water, fair trade, green energy, public health care, and a vibrant democracy. We educate and empower people to hold our governments and corporations accountable. We believe a better Canada and a fairer world are possible. Together, we turn that belief into action.

The Council of Canadians is a registered non-profit organization and does not accept money from corporations or governments. Our work is sustained by the volunteer energy and generous donations of like-minded people.
